Practicing Art

I embrace the power to challenge the status quo in the third act of my life.

I am a contemporary landscape artist whose dreamlike evocative work in gouache and watercolor on wood panels or paper captures the serene yet powerful essence of natural vistas. Deeply rooted in the dynamic spirit of Fauvism, Expressionism, Impressionism, and Surrealism, My style is a unique synthesis that explores the emotional and inherent beauty of both rugged and expansive landscapes.

I practice many forms of Art. Some for myself, some for Wearable Art, merchandise and prints, and originals for sale. Shop here for for merchandise, prints and originals!

Cataloochi Valley Elk measures 24 by 30 inches and is rendered in gouache, marking the opening piece of a new landscape series focused on the Appalachian Mountains. The painting captures an early autumn scene within the Great Smoky Mountains, distinguished by a soft mist that blurs the boundary between foreground and distance. A large stag stands firmly on frosted ground, its fur layered with nuanced browns, whites, and subtle russet tones that convey both texture and presence. Surrounding the elk, slender tree trunks rise sharply, their white and brown bark partially shrouded in fog. The midsection of the composition bursts with vivid yellows, oranges, and reds, reflecting the seasonal shift in foliage with precise yet expressive brushwork. Beyond, dark greens and cool blues define the mountainous horizon, establishing depth without overwhelming the scene. Above, a pale crescent form suggests a moon or other celestial presence, contributing to a quiet, contemplative atmosphere. The work’s layered application and atmospheric quality draw from postmodern Impressionism and Fauvism, articulating both the physical landscape and its intangible light and air. Mounted on stained board, this piece invites reflection on wilderness, transition, and regional identity within a distinct moment of time.

Big Bend Dawn
$225.00

Big Bend Dawn measures 18 by 24 inches and is painted in gouache on black heavyweight vellum texture multimedia paper. The composition presents a layered landscape of Big Bend, Texas, just after sunrise. In the foreground, textured vegetation is rendered in cool greens and blues with subtle earth tones that suggest scrub typical of the region. Golden-yellow hills dominate the midground, their cracked surfaces and defined edges highlighting the rugged geology. A solitary dark blue mountain peak rises in the distance, framed by a sky of broad, sweeping strokes in purple and gray that convey shifting early morning light and atmosphere. The contrast between cool foreground colors and warm midground tones, combined with bold brushwork, captures the landscape’s raw textures and natural vitality without romanticizing its aridity or complexity.

Lunar Vigil
$225.00

Lunar Vigil measures 18 by 24 inches and is executed in gouache on black heavyweight vellum texture multimedia paper. The composition presents a nocturnal landscape under the glow of a full moon rendered as a radiant yellow orb surrounded by detailed circular brushstrokes. Two white wolves serve as central figures: one sits prominently in the foreground on the left, attentively watching toward the distant horizon, while the other stands atop a remote hill to the right, both subtly illuminated by the moonlight. The terrain unfolds through broad, energetic brushstrokes in deep reds, browns, greens, and yellows, suggesting an expansive and untamed environment. Above, the sky is a dynamic arrangement of dark blues and swirling grays that frame the luminous moon, creating a mood of quiet intensity. This piece marks a deliberate shift toward abstraction from previous work, prioritizing emotional resonance and the essence of wilderness over realistic depiction. The stylized wolves and expressive landscape capture a sense of wildness that is both iconic and atmospheric, emphasizing mood and inner feeling rather than literal representation.

The Vision: Cosmic Cycles, Equity, and Renewal

I draw inspiration from the rich and varied terrains of the United States and the British Isles, with a particular focus on the American West, the vibrancy of the skies, and the fluid grace of flowing streams and waterfalls. My aesthetic is defined by a bold, distinctive approach to color and light, often blending hues not typically found in nature to create a compelling visual dialogue. I view color as the heartbeat of my art, using it to create a tapestry of familiarity and imagination.

At the core of my artistic vision is a deep reflection on the sacred cycles of creation, destruction, and renewal. I am fascinated by the eternal rhythm of birth, death, and potential rebirth that pervades the Cosmos and our natural world. My work seeks to capture this possibility of regeneration amidst decay, offering a lens through which we can find hope and resilience.

While landscapes are my primary subject, I also explore figurative work, animal studies, and still lifes. My foundational practice—built through private lessons and institutional education—emphasizes an intensive study of complementary and contrasting hues, allowing me to continually refine my craft.

Extending the Canvas: Wearable Art and Resistance

In an exciting evolution of my creative vision, I have partnered with Le Galeriste to transform my vibrant artworks into high-end wearable fashion and home accessories. This Wearable Art initiative ethically adapts my expressive paintings to soft, high-quality fabrics, allowing collectors to carry the energy of my original compositions into their daily lives.

The Practice: Minimalism and Reflection

I view my art as an act of resistance against authoritarianism and the existential threats to individual liberty. Through my work, I champion a message of equity and justice, aiming to inspire conscious appreciation and active participation in moving toward a more harmonious, inclusive world.

In all my work, my approach is direct and minimalist, aiming to distill the essence of the subjects I portray. I aspire to create a reflective and dreamlike space where viewers can find a momentary escape from the chaos of everyday life, finding solace in the peace and serenity of nature’s beauty. My art offers a window into a serene and harmonious world, underscoring my belief that art is essential for weaving connections through shared human experience.

Today, my creative practice extends beyond the brush to include writing essays and sharing my thoughts on Substack, where I continue to produce work for sale and personal reflection.
